Utmost Importance: Rob Bell

On Justin Taylor’s blog, there is a video from Rob Bell promoting his new book, Love Wins.

In case you don’t know Rob Bell, he is the leader of Mars Hill Bible Church in Michigan. He started Mars Hill in 1999 and in an article in Christianity Today, he states in part, “We’re rediscovering Christianity as an Eastern religion, as a way of life. Legal metaphors for faith don’t deliver a way of life…”

My thought on this is, if you have to “rediscover” Chrisitianity, what  exactly are you discovering?  Are you saying that historical Christianity is wrong?  Where is your scriptural basis to back up your theory? Continue reading

What Does It Mean To Love?

What does it mean to love? Does it mean giving someone what they want? Does it mean never getting angry? One definition of love by dictionary.com is “a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.”

I am going to say that love first came from God. Without love from God, I would say that we wouldn’t know how to love at all. Think of it in this way: You have a cup – even better – you are a cup. God’s love goes into you, and then that love flows out to other people. Continue reading

Do I Love Jesus?

I could sit for hours and discuss theology and world religions with some people – in all actuality, probably not because I am an active person – but I do love to talk and sometimes debate about these things. I like to discuss doctrine and church practices. I love to discuss the Bible.

But what does any of that matter if I do not love Christ? And sure we can all (as Christians) say that we love Christ, but what I mean is this, are we in love with Him? Is He all that we desire, is He all that we treasure? Do we long to spend time with Him? Do we place Him above everything else – yes everything else? Do we put Him above our job, our schoolwork, or even our other personal relationships (with family, girlfriend / boyfriend, etc.)? Continue reading
