It’s Just One Little “L”…! How Hard Can It Be?

Word versus world…you add that “l”, it completely changes the meaning. As Christians, we are called to live our lives according to the Word and not the world. I know from my own experience that this is easier said than done.

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” – Colossians 3:2

“…Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?…” – James 4:4

“Do not be conformed to this world…” – Romans 12:2

“…Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” – Romans 12:9

Imagine This…

It’s 5:00. It is a Friday night. You are driving home from work. You have the radio tuned to your favorite station. You are caught in stop and go rush hour traffic. Suddenly the music you like listening to cuts off and an emergency broadcast comes over the air. The man says that in a remote village of India they have found a mysterious deadly virus. How about we just call it the “mystery flu.” They state that it has already claimed 30,000 lives in that remote village of India. You brush it off thinking nothing of it. After all, it is just in a remote village of India – nothing to worry about.

You finally make it home to your wife and son. You sit down at the table and have a nice meal with your wife and son, who is 6 years old. Later on you tuck your son into bed, and you sit down to watch the late news. The commentator on the news says that this mystery flu is spreading out of India, and that is has no longer claimed just 30,000 lives, but it has claimed millions. Continue reading

Responding to “Does Satan Exist” (Video Debate)

This blog is longer than I had originally intended, but I think it is a good read if I say so myself.

Here is the youtube link to the video. It was a “debate” among four people that was featured on ABC Nightline. It would probably be worth watching for you. It is about an hour long though, so be prepared for that.

Anyway, the issue was to examine if satan exists. That is actually not the main point I want to respond to with my writing today. The question I want to respond to was presented by the host of the debate. He asked, “how do you square the notion of a loving God with the existence of a devil?” Continue reading

What Defines Me?

Speaking from a guy perspective, there are certain things that define us (guys). We can be defined by the friends we have, what kind of activities we are involved in, or even our status in the community. Mostly though, I think we are defined by our job. We tell people what we do, and that is pretty much who we are.

I know that I have always been defined by my job – or so I thought. If someone asks me what I do, I wouldn’t tell them that I work at this place ___ (fill in the blank). I would always say that I am a ___ (profession – fill in the blank). That’s what I am, it’s not just that I work at a certain place. Continue reading

The Call Is The Same

The gospel call is the same for everyone. Have you ever thought about it before? I hadn’t really put much thought into it. One of my newest favorite verses is in Ephesians:

“There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call – one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” – Ephesians 4:4-6 (ESV)

I happened to discover (or be led to) this passage while I was in Russia back in July. Of course, I am not Russian, I didn’t know the language or the culture, and yet I was there to show and share the love of Christ.

No matter where you are in the world, what language you speak, what profession you are in, what your situation is, or who you are, the gospel call is the same for all people: Continue reading

In one day, I leave for Russia on a team mission trip. We will be gone for two weeks. This trip has me excited, and I have just now started to get a little nervous after hearing about some of the security and safety measures that we will have to go through.

The purpose of this trip should be obvious based on my wording in the first paragraph, and for those who know me, but we are going for “cultural exchange.” As I understand it, we will be traveling in groups of two with about ten Russian college students in each group. Most/all of these will not be Christians, so our purpose is to set a Christ-like example, and let Him shine through us (while exchanging cultures of course). Continue reading

My Life Verse – Romans 12:2

My life verse is Romans 12:2, but I also use verse 1 as well.

I would say that for a while now my life verses have been Romans 12:1-2. I will show the verses first and then I will go into some detail about them.

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, {which is} your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:1-2 (NASB)

These verses completely transformed my views and actions on a number of subjects, from what I watch, what I think (or try to think), how I view others’ perceptions of me, and even my ideas on dating and relationships (screwed that one up a couple of times since then). Continue reading
