Utmost Importance: Rob Bell

On Justin Taylor’s blog, there is a video from Rob Bell promoting his new book, Love Wins.

In case you don’t know Rob Bell, he is the leader of Mars Hill Bible Church in Michigan. He started Mars Hill in 1999 and in an article in Christianity Today, he states in part, “We’re rediscovering Christianity as an Eastern religion, as a way of life. Legal metaphors for faith don’t deliver a way of life…”

My thought on this is, if you have to “rediscover” Chrisitianity, what  exactly are you discovering?  Are you saying that historical Christianity is wrong?  Where is your scriptural basis to back up your theory? Continue reading

Utmost Importance: The Emergent Church

I just had a new thought. I have been absent from the blogging world for a while, because I always seem to want that big, attention grabbing post, and I just haven’t had the inspiration for it (yet).

Anyway, I have not been posting about ideas and articles that I read, that I may have an opinion about because they just aren’t “blog worthy.”

Well, that will change. As they come to me, I will post them with the tag, “Utmost Importance.”  They are urgent reads that need attention in our culture today.  So here is one based on something  I just read on a blog. Continue reading

Contradictions In The Bible?

Well hello! Yes, I am still around just haven’t written anything or shared anything recently. Well, here is something worth reading.

On November 11, skeptic/atheist Sam Harris commissioned a chart through his foundation “Project Reason” showing how the Bible is wrong, according to him.

There have been a couple of notable responses to this chart so far, so I will share Continue reading

A Common Word?

A couple days ago I ran across an article, or series of articles, in the Washington Post by Alison Lake. She was detailing her conversion story from Catholicism to Islam. It is a three part series, and the links are below if you want to read them.

Part 1 – Confessions of a convert to Islam

Part 2 – Converting to Islam Today

Part 3 – “Why Don’t You Love Jesus”

I will say just one thing about this author and her series of articles. Continue reading

A Less Wrong False Teacher?

Is there such a thing as a “less wrong” false teacher? Or have you ever said something like, “Well, he’s not as bad as this person.”?

I caught myself thinking that last night. First, we all know what a false teacher is… one who does not preach the gospel. One who is, as some put it, gospel light. Or any number of movements out there – the Health, Wealth & Prosperity Gospel, the Word of Faith movement, Continue reading

Assurance of Salvation

How do you know that you are saved? How do I know that I am saved? Is it because once in my life I prayed a prayer inviting Jesus into my heart. No. (That can be a stumbling block, and a false assurance of salvation.)

Is it because I live right and believe that there is a God? No.

It is because that I have believed that Jesus Christ is my Savior, he is the chosen One, he is the one who took my sins on the cross FOR me. Jesus is not a part of my life. He is my life. My old life is gone and I have a new life in Christ.

But how can we continually know that we are saved and have proof of assurance? Continue reading

False Teachers

Here is a video to think about from Paul Washer.

He says (and I completely agree with based on Biblical fact) that,

“False teachers are God’s judgment on people who don’t want God but in the name of religion plan on getting everything their carnal heart desires.”

“He [Joel Osteen and all the rest] is the judgment of God upon them [people under false teaching] because they want exactly what he wants, and it is not God!”

Think about that…

To hell with my flesh!

(HT: T2S)

“Oh my Lord, I cry out to you, for I need nothing else. God I hate the sin that lurks within me. Rub out my desires and my self-intentions. Take my sin far from me and renew a right spirit within me. Lord if You don’t act, I have no hope and I have no joy.

“Only in Your Son do I find my strength; lately I have been weak. Oh my Lord, to hell with this culture, the devices and the Continue reading

What does it mean to be justified? (Short Version)

The dictionary definition of justification is: “Something (such as a fact or circumstance) that shows an action to be reasonable or necessary…”

So, what is justification? Justification is the act in which God declares sinners to be righteous.

The classic text here is Romans 3:23-24, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified by his grace as a gift…”

That’s My King!

I linked to this video last year in April, but it never gets old, and I always love hearing it, so here it is again.

God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow! This is a timeless message because the cross is always relevant. We don’t need our churches trying to become more “culturally relevant” (I think I cringe when I hear that phrase).

Levels of Doctrine

I promise I am working on  a new post…

Until then, take note of this one from Justin Taylor’s blog:

In answer to that question, I’ve found Erik Thoennes’s perspective to be thoughtful and helpful. The following is from his first essay on Doctrine in the ESV Study Bible.

The ability to discern the relative importance of theological beliefs is vital for effective Christian life and ministry. Both the purity and unity of the church are at stake in this matter. The relative importance of theological issues can fall within four categories: Continue reading

Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church

Below is a video from a sermon preached by Paul Washer in October 2008 at a revival conference in Atlanta, GA. The title of the sermon is “Ten Indictments Against The Modern Church in America.”

It is already being called one of the best sermons of our time. Paul Washer delivers a urgent appeal to the Christians and Churches in North America that many have been believing a false gospel and have false assurance of their salvation. He lists ten indictments against the modern Church system in America. Continue reading
